I’m Very Happy I Deleted My Facebook Account
I almost titled this article, “Deleting Facebook Was the Best Thing I’ve Ever Done.” But that would discount many major life events — such as getting married and being a father. So, maybe deleting my Facebook account wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever done, but I am very happy about it, and it has brought more peace to my life.
What Was So Annoying about Facebook?
Facebook is a tool for division and cruelty, rousing people to say things online they wouldn’t say in person. And without any scientific data to support me, I believe when people get more practice and experience in online cruelty, the repetition emboldens them to face-to-face callousness.
People post nasty opinions and derogatory memes about politicians and celebrities they don’t like stirring up dissent in the comments. I got caught up in this silliness for a while and didn’t like the seeds of bitterness FB planted in my soul. Even when I backed off as an active participant, opening the FB app bombarded me with negativity.
Promote Peace and Build Up Each Other
As I read the Bible this morning, the apostle Paul reminded me of the life I should be pursuing. He said in Romans 14:17–19 (I bolded parts for emphasis):
“for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever serves Christ in this way is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then, we must pursue what promotes peace and what builds up one another.”
Serve Christ through righteousness, peace, and joy and promote peace and build up one another — this is how Christians should live and lead. And in all fairness, many people use Facebook as a tool for these purposes, but the loud and obnoxious drown them out.
More Peace and Joy in My Life Without Facebook
It’s been half a year since I deleted my Facebook account, and I haven’t missed it one second. Instead, I have read more, written more, studied more, and generally lived a real life instead of one online. I've made space for peace and joy instead of allowing Facebook to sow seeds of bitterness.
Why don’t you take a baby step and start by deleting the FB app? Delete your account later if you kick the habit. I think you’ll be a happier human.
